Who is Bob Courtway?
In the fall of this year, every student enrolled at BCMS was asked that very question. Students responded with several surprising answers including, he was a doctor, he founded our school, he paid for our school..etc. The students were given two questions to research: "Who was Dr. Bob Courtway" and "Why, of all people in the world, would the Conway Public School Board decide to name our school after him?" Students then spent two days researching historical archives in the media center along with several artifacts on loan from Mrs. Betty Courtway including his whistle used at swim meets, his personal bible, and several of his awards.
It was soon evident to the students that he was a humble man who dedicated his life to great things. Most of all to the young people he served as mentor and coach. The students discovered his personal character traits that made his great: honesty, integrity, others above self, faith, and courage just to name of a few.
Our motto at Bob Courtway Middle School is, "Catch the Spirit". Students were further encouraged to make an inference about what that actually means. What spirit are they trying to catch? Of course, catching the spirit of such a great man as our namesake, Bob Courtway, is a goal each of us no matter how old should aspire to.
Presently, students who are "caught in the spirit of Bob Courtway' are being recognized by having their picture on a special bulletin board and their families are receiving a postcard marking their achievement.
What a legacy and challenge for the students of Bob Courtway Middle School, past, present, and future.
